Try Gaelic!!!!

You might think Spanish or French is difficult to learn. Have a look at the Gaelic translations.......
There are actually people in town here who speak Gaelic. There is still very much a Gaelic presence (as also Acadian....18% of population of NS are Acadian,and many people fly the flag which looks like the French flag plus a gold star).

Cape Breton has the highest concentration of people speaking Gaelic (a dialect of Scots Gaelic) in Canada, and amazingly in the mid-19th century it was the third most spoken language in our country, after English and French. There are also pockets of the population on mainland NS and PEI who also speak Gaelic, and spread throughout the rest of the country. There are efforts being made to revitalise the language and breathe new life into the whole Celtic culture.


There is the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts, and the world famous Celtic Colours...fantastic concerts and workshops of all kinds all over Cape Breton every October for 8 days. In the past Rita McNeil has done tours to show off her old stompin'grounds, and she holds concerts all thru NS and has a Tea Room still running up island from us.

**Nope, we aren't learning Gaelic. We're intimidated.
