D-Feat Breast Cancer Campaign

I don't normally post on Fridays, but I got this link this morning that I found encouraging.  On Monday I wrote about the War on Cancer, and how it really hasn't accomplished anything positive.  But then here we have something/someOnes doing something Pro-active.  Actually getting truthful, positive information out to help women decrease their chance of getting breast cancer.

Vitamin D is good for much more than protecting against breast cancer. But that's todays message, anyways.

D-Feat Breast Cancer Campaign recruits salons to help promote the message that vitamin D helps prevent breast cancer

Going to enjoy that spring sunshine today!

Lapbooks

I heard about making Lapbooks years ago from other homeschoolers, but we just never did them at all.   I guess I just didn't see what all the excitement was about, and the children and I were busy scrapbooking our life.

But I now have a new appreciation for Lapbooks, and I see a spark that has ignited an excitement in several of the children, particularly Maret who has been busy working on all things Horsey.

Inside this refolded folder she has several small reports on pedigrees, common horse names for the USA and the UK, the top 10 Race-horses, etc.

And the exciting thing is that she is self-motivated to do the research, do tidy printing, and work tirelessly on something that ends in a project she can hold and proudly share with others.

Gaelyn, needing more help from mom, has also accomplished a few Lapbooks.  Hers are actually more of a coming together of work she's already done.  I just put it into a Lapbook form so she can show it off in a more pleasing presentation.

Here's her book on Parts of a Flower, and includes some info on the need for sunshine and water and nutrients that she narrated to Mom. There's also a cross-word she did, and some flower pedals she drew for a little math practise, and several different types of flowers she coloured along with a diagram of a flower that she labeled the parts.
The rose below was partially covered over (on purpose) when I was printing it off so she had to try and draw in the other part of the rose as to what it would look like.

This was a flip-up book Gaelyn did to help her with the Days of the Week.  So sweet what she drew to help her remember the names of the days.  Hard to see for some of them, but let me explain.
Monday is a moon and stars.  Good connection between Monday and Moon-day.
Tuesday is a pointing finger.  As in "I am choosing some candies.  Choosing sounds like Tues....day!"
Wednesday has a picture of swirling wind.  Wed  ~~ wind.  Sounds close to me!!
Thursday gets a 3, because it starts with the same beginning sound, Th
Friday has challah, because we often celebrate the beginning of Sabbath with the traditional braided egg-bread, challah.
Saturday is a day of rest, right, and we sit on chairs.  Sat.....on a chair.
Sunday, no brainer.  You got it!  It's a Sun.

Gaelyn had (close to) tonnes of loose papers that she was doing copywork on from Draw Write NOW! books, and I lumped the farm and other animals all together in an accordion type thing.....

and now she can flip through her writing and see it like a book (that's actually taller than her when it's all pulled out).  She has some simple drawings she can look at, too.

I've unloaded of most of our scrapbooking paraphernalia, which was hard for me but I did it, and so now the Lapbooking is helping me feed the creative side of me.  And its giving a real boost to the children as they see their hard work being displayed, as if it is treasured.

These are humble beginnings, but I know the children will get more and more creative, and more skills to keep them tidy and well displayed.  Mitchell and I worked on the Months of the Year, and are now collecting information for one on Ancient Egypt.  Gaelyn will be doing one on the Provinces and Territories of Canada, and Toveli will hopefully do something about plants (the bug hasn't hit her yet).  Danaka is actually doing one on some Maths Formulas to help her remember them, and likely something on the Elizabethan period.

If you are interested in checking out Lapbooks, there's loads and loads of stuff online, some free and some not.

Go for it.  We are having a blast.

Sunlight is Good for your Health

So many people are afraid of the sun.

Everette and I took our youngest 3 to the big playground in town last week, and at only 10 in the morning I saw a mother who was all bundled up in long sleeves, jacket to her neck, full length pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses on.  Her toddler was similarly dressed, although he really didn't want to keep his hat on.  She was far more successful getting him to keep his sunglasses on.  And the older son who was likely 7-ish dutifully kept his sunglasses and hat on, and kept near arms-length from his mama.

Honestly, I thought this was sad.  Sad that this good-intentioned-loving-mama was living in fear from the beautiful warm sun that blesses our days.  Fear of cancer, premature aging, whatever.  Fear to be exposed.  And she was passing fear on to her impressionable children.

How entrenched are the ideas/lies we've been fed from 'Corporate America'?  Can we not think for ourselves?

Here's a video from The Health Ranger to help us better understand the health we can get from eating properly and getting appropriate sun, and what dangers may lie ahead if we avoid sun exposure, and why suntan lotion might be the culprit behind much of the skin cancer that's occurring.

I found Mike's video enlightening and refreshing.  Because I'm tired of people being so afraid of the sun, and even tanning salons.  Dr Mercola says to stay away from tanning beds that make a noise when running (other than the actual timer ticking), but that tanning beds and standup tanning lamps are a boon to your health, particularly during winter months and those living farther away from the equator.

Consider whose been funding the nonsense of the media we've been gobbling up for decades.  Who is bound to lose money if we have a greater understanding of our bodies and a healthy relationship with the (free) sunshine God has blessed us with?

Inform yourself.  Think for yourself.  Love on yourself.

Consider Sunglasses

Days are getting longer, and for some of you they are already much brighter.  You are probably finding you wear your sunglasses more and more.  Or maybe you wear them all year long because of the snow-glare.  Or you live where it is habitually sunny (I want to come live with you, then.).  Here's something interesting about sunglasses.......

"I once read that wearing sunglasses outside actually enhances a person's chance of getting sunburned.  Sunglasses block the sun's rays from reaching the optic nerve, tricking it into thinking that it is dark outside.  This causes the body to produce less of a protective skin coating, increasing the risk for sunburn and even skin cancer.  After reading about this, I decided to try it:  I have now stopped wearing sunglasses, and now I never get sunburned, and I don't need sunscreen (though I'm very careful not to overdo sun exposure).  The human body is designed so incredibly that it works with all the elements of nature, especially the daylight and darkness."

Paul Nison in 'The Daylight Diet'

Have you ever really thought about the health implications of wearing sunglasses?  Have you found that the more you wear your sun glasses, the more you rely on them?  You squint at the slightest brightness?

Have you considered what messages you are sending throughout your body when its daylight out but your optic nerve is interpreting that its not high-noon because you are wearing dark glasses?

Believe me, I don't have the answers.  But I'm thinking about these things, because I believe that the vast majority of these fake things we incorporate into our lifestyles (sunglasses, shoes, cell phones, etc) are more detrimental to us than beneficial.

I'm not suggesting that we throw them all away and walk around naked.  But really, do we seriously consider what these things bring into our lives, individually and accumulatively?

Question for You:  Are you reliant on sunglasses?  Have you ever considered a correlation between wearing sunglasses with sunburns and/or digestion?

Vitamin D for All

You must have heard by now, over and over and over that many of us are deficient in Vitamin D.
There is a reason so many people are talking about it, and trying to inform us of how best to acquire the needed Vitamin D.  Our health depends on it.

The studies are showing over and over that many (if not most) of our dis-eases are caused from a lack or deficiency of this vitamin.  So you need to take note and follow with some action to make sure that you aren't one of the deficient ones, setting yourself up for dis-ease.

Here's some articles to read to inform yourself, if you haven't already done that.
Epidemic of Vitamin D Deficiency Sweeping the World
'Epidemic' of Vitamin D Deficiency
Demand Soars for Vitamin D

Some say that too much of the information about Vitamin D is circumstantial rather than scientific.  Believe what you will.  (You will anyways, regardless of what I have to say.)

But I believe that there truly is a link between sun exposure and our health.  Plenty of doctors, like Thomas Lodi know beyond a shadow of doubt that cancer rates along with other dis-eases increase for populations that live north & south of the Tropics of Cancer & Capricorn, respectively.

One study found that sunlight exposure lowered the risk of breast cancer by 30 to 40 percent. Dr. Robert Arnot in his The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet,  claims that national rates of breast cancer occurs at a much higher rate in colder, cloudier northern regions than in sunnier southern regions.

There was a ten-year epidemiological study done at Johns Hopkins University Medical School that showed that exposure to full-spectrum light is positively related to the prevention of breast, colon and rectal cancers.

In our culture today we tend to spend the vast majority of our time 24/7 in buildings or vehicles where we lack fresh air and sunshine.  The farther we live away from the equator, the more we hide inside, or when we do go outside we have more skin covered because of the colder temperatures.  The rays of the sun are weaker at these latitudes also, which would require us to spend even more time exposed to the sun to acquire the same benefits as those near the equator.

Don't think that I am suggesting long periods of time spent with unprotected sun exposure.  We must practice common sense (which isn't common any more).  But if we learn to listen to our bodies, and live productive lives we won't be laying exposed on a beach for 4 hrs near the equator at high noon, sweating away trying to get a good tan (with or without suntan lotion)  That is not a 'normal' thing to be doing.  Besides the topic of immodesty, it is unproductive and lazy.

I am sure that living here in Canada, my family members do not get enough vitamin D from the sun, which is obviously the best natural source.  Although many of us spend long hours playing and working outside during the summertime,  the warmer months where arms and legs are exposed just don't amount to very much out of 12 months.

So, what's the solution?  There are a couple of suggestions, each requiring your own diligent research to find out what works best for you and your family situation.  Some natural sources of vitamin D include salmon, tuna, fish oils and vitamin D supplements. There is liquid Vitamin drops (make sure its Vitamin D3), and now there are even nano-sprays.  There are sun-beds you can use at a day spa, or even those you can set up in your own home.

Do You Have a "Nature Deficiency" ?

I think The Health Ranger, Mike Adams, is my favorite on-line writer about issues pertaining to health. I've shared his thoughts before, and here is another article I wanted to share with you. It is something I definitely have a deficiency in, and I get chilled just thinking of going outside here today on Cape Breton. Seems the older I get, the more I hate to be cold.

I'm still dreaming of a warmer location to reside in, and a huge part of the reason for that is because of the health benefits that are easier to attain there.

Anyways, here's the article by Mike. Not really anything profound.....just common sense that no longer is common!

Heal yourself in 15 days by correcting your "nature deficiency" (part nine)

I'd also add that sleeping with our windows open can certainly improve our health and sleep. When we sleep with the windows and doors closed, we are obviously breathing in stale air all night long. When our body is in a prime cleansing cycle, we should be aiding it in its job by providing fresh live air. You'll have a better sleep, and wake up totally refreshed.

More About Sunshine for Health

I found it an interesting comment by Dr. Mercola that if we were meant to obtain our Vitamin D from our diet, then we would expect breastmilk to contain it.  Listen up for more info in the following video:

Question for You:  How do you feel about spending time out in the sun?  Do you take extra precautions (ie. lotions, hats, full clothing, etc.) or just don't spend extended amounts of time unprotected?  Or do you avoid the sun?

Sunshine, Sunglasses & Cancer

Why I'm really game to move south of here!

And if you insist on wearing sunglasses, Paul Nison says to remove your sunglasses while eating as they otherwise interfere with the optic nerve, signaling the body that it isn't the time of day to be eating and digesting.

Question for You:  Are you 'addicted' to wearing sunglasses?  Honestly?

Sunlight

Mike Adams interviewed Dr Michael Holick, who years ago got fired from his job because he was advocating safe sun exposure . This is the transcript of the interview, plus at the end are some notes by Mike Adams (of Natural News).

I'm going to enjoy some sunshine today!!! and go barefoot!

Question for You: Do you think that you get enough sun exposure without using sun screen?
